Mandation is a three-night event series dictated by a handbook guiding participants through rules to follow while in attendance. The first night I (Elle) made three rules for participants in the categories Self, Interpersonal, and Absurd that I myself follow. Based upon interviews with attendees and event observance, I paired particpants up for night two and asked them to give their partners rules to follow that they themselves follow, in the same categories. The third night, participants created rules for their partner to follow that they felt would push them out of their traditional way of being, based upon what they noticed during their experience of the previous night.

Mandation film and book are to be watched and read in tandem. The film and book star 22 participants making 11 pairings, each dictated by their initials, seen on the first page of the book, and appearing as participants photos switch in the film.
The three channels (four/five including the partner photographs) is a stagnant continuous shot of Night 1 on the top left. Below are photographs of the pairings that align with the two channels on the right. The two right channels are handheld footage of Night 3 and show each time each person can be seen in the footage.
The book starts with the initials of the participants with a + dictating their partner pairing. The rest of the book is in a chart format, information about each person can be tracked horizontally. The information is sourced from their booklets (seen below) they filled out and turned in (some of them) and the notes are handwritten from interviews I took at some point during each night.
By pairing the film and book together, I distort the information available to viewers, making it possible yet difficult to decipher. Viewers can see
